Prior to becoming a periodontist, he practised as a general dentist from 1977, which included five years as a dental officer in the Royal Australian Navy. He qualified with a L.D.S B.DSc. in 1977 after having completed a B.Sc. (Hon) at the University of Melbourne. In 1985 he completed a M.DSc. in periodontics at the University of Melbourne and then went to the University of California to work as an assistant professor before returning to practise as a periodontist in Melbourne.
Dr Edmond Lobaza has been involved in teaching periodontics to dental students, dentists and training periodontists. He is a senior fellow in the school of Dental Science at the faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Science at the University of Melbourne.
He has involved himself in various scientific research projects. He is an honorary researcher with the Calcium Biology and Proteonomics group in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Melbourne.
